Rina Torchinsky - Final Project

April 18, 2019 - The College Park Volunteer Fire Department is located on Baltimore Ave.,  across the street from the University of Maryland. The station primarily serves the surrounding Prince George's County City.
April 18, 2019 - Peter Johnson, a fire protection graduate, stands in front of the trucks with sophomore Timothy McDonald and junior fire protection major, Caleb Cotner. The firefighters are hanging out by the smoker before preparing dinner.
April 18, 2019 - Johnson stands by a smoker just outside the garage. He is preparing for the evening's communal feast of, what he called, "Brats and Tots."
April 18, 2019 - Johnson shakes up charcoals and lighter fluid until it erupts in flames. He is preparing the grill for Bratwurst.
April 18, 2019 - Jackets and boots line the walls inside the garage. The close proximity between gear and truck allows the firefighters to respond quickly and efficiently to internal emergency alerts.
April 18, 2019 - Hats are housed on the upper shelves of the garage, so firefighters do not have to reach down to grab this essential part of their wardrobe.
April 28, 2019 - A pillar in the garage, nestled between emergency vehicles, serves as an accessible hook for gear.
April 18, 2019 - Just inside the garage, there's a couch where some volunteers like to relax when they're waiting on getting a call.
April 28, 2019 - Adam Quiat, a fire protection engineering graduate student, works behind the desk the night after the station's formal. He situated himself next to a hot drink and an electrolyte beverage after the long night.
April 28, 2019 - Alex Wang, a graduate, relaxes on his phone in the control center at the station. He had just returned from a call.
April 18, 2019 - The station features a weight room. While it's not expansive, one firefighter remarked that it was better than trecking to workout at Eppley.
April 18, 2019 - The workout room has a whiteboard where some of the firefighters have left notes for each other, like "Friends don't let friends skip leg day" and "Blood, Sweat, Respect."
April 18, 2019 - Volunteers use this room, called "the dayroom," to watch movies when they are not on a call. The station's dog, Bandit, lives in a crate just behind the rear couch.
April 18, 2019 - One study room at the station is lined with thin organized "fire command" and "firehouse" books, but one firefighter said that there's not always that much studying done in here.
April 18, 2019 - Firefighters work productively in this second-floor room. The sun shines through the stained glass station emblem shines and onto the desk on this afternoon.
April 18, 2019 -  John Datillio, a junior fire protection technology student at North Shore Community College, stands at the kitchen island over a bowl of chopped green peppers and onions.  The volunteers feasted on "Brats and Tots" Thursday night.
April 18, 2019 - The firefighters snack on Doritos and chat in the kitchen before dinner.
April 18, 2019 - Datillio and Chase Rouse, a sophomore physics major, set up the ladder to reach the roof. The duo had to climb to the roof retrieve a ball that they were using to play with the dog
April 28, 2019 - At the sound of the siren, Steven Scharaldi, a freshman fire protection engineering student, departs from the station to the emergency on this E.M.S. call.
April 18, 2019 - As volunteers respond to emergencies, the garage begins to empty out.
