Week 11 - Shauneen Miranda
Perspectives on the President (Part 1 of Final Essay)
Here at the University of Maryland, political stances and advocacy permeate through campus. Empowered with energy and activism as young adults, UMD students have a lot to say about the current Trump administration. Regardless of how you feel about Trump, everyone has a valid opinion. As Trump's first presidential term winds down, I became curious as to why people like or dislike him. Thus began my quest to let students reflect on their thoughts by writing them down on paper.
Shayan Hassani, a junior economics major, had little to say about his dislike of Trump near the Edward St. John Teaching and Learning Center on April 22, 2019. Trump has been caught for saying numerous false statements in a variety of situations.
Alysa Conway, a sophomore government and politics and public policy double major, pointed out the social issues that she believes Trump fails to address while relaxing at McKeldin Mall on April 22, 2019. Conway said she could go on and on about what she doesn't like about Trump. But she wanted to keep it short and simple, so she ended with "etcetera."
Adam Tu (left), a second-year MBA graduate student and Ryan Wu (right), a second-year education graduate student, offered opposing perspectives on Trump in front of McKeldin Library on April 22, 2019. Tu and Wu are originally from Taiwan but came to the U.S. to pursue degrees.
Dante Brown, a junior biology major, shared his opinion while raising money for prisoners who are receiving little pay for their labor in front of the Edward St. John Teaching and Learning Center on April 23, 2019. Brown is passionate about advocating for prisoners who receive below minimum wage.
Sandra Bazubwabo, a junior government and politics and dance double major, focused on the problems she feels Trump fails to address while sitting at McKeldin Mall on April 23, 2019. To Bazubwabo, Trump serves a symbol of America's avoidance of its issues.
Sam Romanoff, a 23-year-old non-UMD student, had a lot to say about Trump near McKeldin Mall on April 23, 2019. As an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) canvasser, Romanoff tries to raise awareness and money toward reforming Trump's immigration policies. He spoke about how undocumented immigrants have been negatively affected by the Trump administration. #DissentIsPatriotic is a common hashtag for the ACLU.
