Week 11 - Jillian Atelsek
Juneau, a 10-month-old golden retriever, Australian shepherd and Great Pyrenees mix, enjoys the afternoon sunlight on Saturday, April 20, 2019. Her owners, who rescued her when she was a puppy, were told that her eyes would eventually both turn to brown — but that never happened.
The sunlight falls through Esther Brittain's kitchen window. She's been a stay-at-home mom for nearly 15 years, allowing her to exercise her passion for cooking into crafting creative homemade dinners for her family almost every night. Now that the youngest of her children are teenagers, though, she's started working again.
Benjamin Atelsek, 13, is a good sport as his sister makes him pose in the afternoon sunlight so she can take photos for class. He's dressed and ready to go out to dinner with his family, and mind is probably on the bottomless Red Robin fries he's about to eat.
Tom Atelsek holds one of the two family cats, Simon, who intently watches kids playing in the yard. Simon and his brother, Felix, were rescued from a local farm when they were 11 days old, and bottle-fed by the family for the first few months of their lives.
Tom looks through one of the family's Haggadahs, laid on a table cloaked in an elaborate tablecloth — both mementos from his mother, who died eight years ago. He led a scaled-down version of the Passover Seder this year — always one of his mom's favorite traditions — but wants to study and prepare more before next year's holiday.
Space is limited in the family's pre-Civil War farmhouse, so Brittain has gotten creative with storing her kitchen utensils. Whisks, ladles and tongs are secured to the window frame using small plastic hooks.
Tom looks out over the yard as the family prepares to leave for dinner. He's getting impatient that his daughter won't get in the car and stop taking photos.
