Sexual Health and Education in UMD Greek Life
shot on iPhone

University of Maryland's Greek Life has been putting a stronger emphasis on sexual education and risk prevention among chapters in the last few years. On Fraternity Row, sororities and fraternities alike are holding more events to facilitate discussion about important topics like sexual health.

Today, at the Gamma Phi Beta house, there is a Sexual Health talk run by Peer Advocates for the UMD Health Center.

Many members of Gamma Phi Beta volunteer at health and wellness resources on campus, and they bring their work home with them. Lucy Wurwand, whose door is shown on the left, keeps condoms and dental dams available for all members of the house on her door. Wurwand works as a CARE peer advocate. Chapter President Madi Jackson is also a peer advocate for CARE, and provides many resources and informational cards on her door for members as well.

Risk Management Chairwoman Shyla Cadogan put on the Sexual Health talk event to better educate the members of Gamma Phi Beta about safe sexual relation.

The Health Center peer advocates set up games that made learning more engaging, including this one pictured above. Participants had to try to guess what flavor of condom was in each jar based on the smell.

Lucy Wurwand poses with the scented condoms and the demonstration model.

Maria Arrazola shows off her new poster that she got from the Health Center peer advocates. The poster says, "Wear Your Rubbers."

At almost every UMD Health Center event oriented around sexual health, the peer advocates give away free condoms to promote safe sex practices. Free condoms are also available in the UMD Health Center at all times. The peer advocates left the extras with Wurwand so she could restock her door when needed.
