Week 10 - Joe Lotano

Freshman journalism major Evan Lynch finds the time in-between
classes to work on homework. Following his GVPT 170 class,
Lynch begins working on some astronomy homework.

This was one of the first photos I took and I honestly did not have much of a clue as to what I was doing. The flash was unintentionally used and the angle is just awkward, so there are definitely a lot of changes I could make that would make this type of picture better.

Freshman Katie Maher takes some free time during her shift at Phillip
Merrill College. Maher, a journalism major, works an on campus job
as a staffer for the college of journalism.

I think this photo would have easily benefitted from more light, a better angle and more view of an emotion on Katie's face. It's a bland picture but could have to potential to be a pretty interesting shot of what it is like to be an employed student.

Leigh Papadopoulos heads to Eppley for a quick workout before
his next class. Papadopoulos, an economics major, says basketball
is one of his favorite hobbies.

Again, this is an example of my inexperience early on in the semester. I was struggling to adjust the ISO in accordance to the lighting in the gym, and it was my first time using sport mode. An action shot like this could definitely be improved upon with more expertise of photography.

Ben Palmer, a Left Bench TV staffer, works on uploading and organizing the video
packages for that day's show. Palmer, a sophomore journalism major, has the VTR
room duty for this week's show, but it varies each week for all the staffers.

This picture is just an awkward angle. I thinking the lighting is pretty nice and the background is interesting, but I think with more practice, I could have chosen a different angle of the picture that can still showcase the intricacy of the environment.

Adam Logue hangs out in his room, sipping some chocolate milk. The
freshman journalism major covers the label with a post-it note, concealing
any possibility of free advertisement.

I really liked this picture, especially the lighting, but a wider portrait-type shot would have been more beneficial to the setting of the photograph.

Freshmen Tino Quagliata and J.T. Hoagland walk back from their Journalism 201
class. The two journalism majors just endured a roughly two hour class.

After a couple attempts of taking this photo of Tino and J.T. walking from class, I settled for this picture, but if I were to do it again, I would maybe wait for a more opportune moment, such as during the golden hour.

Sophomore international business major Phylicia Williams (left), freshman
computer science major Ivan Yeung (middle), and junior animal science major Bailey
Clark (right) are keeping up with their front desk duties at Ellicott Hall.

The lighting is kind of cool, as the brightness of the laptop casts some nice contrast on the image, I think adjusting some of my settings could have made this photograph more appealing.

Senior computer science major Andy Huang has the eye of the tiger
while lining up his shot. Huang is a member of the UMD Billiards League,
a competitive tournament style league located at TerpZone.

I really like this photograph. It shows how far I have progressed throughout this semester, and it combines my understanding of a camera — such as ISO, sport mode, etc. — and my timeliness of photo opportunities. However, I would revisit this picture and the entire assignment as a whole so I can tell a better story about the UMD Billiards League.
