week 10 - emma grazado
The following content deals with sensitive subjects for some people.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. On campus on April 10th, CARE organized the Clothesline Project. Sexual assault survivors and supporters decorated shirts showing their sentiments. The shirts were hung up on the Hornbake quad.
Many shirts showed support for victims, and provided positive reminders for the community.
At the UMD Sex Week's annual Condom Fashion Show, participants made outfits and accessories out of Global Protection ONE Condoms. The event is held each year to support Youth HIV and AIDS Awareness Day.
Models walked down the runway wearing outfits made from condoms, and audience members could create and wear these sunglasses and crowns to wear as they watched the show.
Prevent Sexual Assault at UMD held it's annual Occupy McKeldin event. The 8-hour long demonstration featured speakers of survivors, activities for survivors and supporters, and resources for anyone in need of help. 5 hours into the event, a large crowd still listens intently to a speaker from the National Center on Violence against Women in the Black Community.
Campus Advocates Respond and Educate to Stop Violence, or CARE to Stop Violence, peer advocates tabled at the event, offering free phone wallets, stress toys, and counseling resource information to attendees. CARE is part of the University Health Center and works to protect sexual assault and relationship violence, especially on UMD's campus.
Those who attended Occupy McKeldin were able to write letters to survivors to stand in solidarity with them. The letters were laid out around the tables outside for observers to read through.
Earlier in the day, as a part of UMD Greek Life Sisters in Service week, sororities made care packages for sexual assault survivors.
The view of the demonstration from Testudo's perspective. The warm weather brought out may spectators and listeners to the different speakers and events on the mall.
