Week 9 - Shauneen Miranda
Language House: Coffee Conversations
Here at the UMD's St. Mary's Language House, students can practice foreign languages in a casual and inviting setting. Every Monday from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Coffee Conversations allows students to converse with native speakers in languages such as German, Korean, Hebrew and Spanish.
Melissa Stolle, a junior linguistics major, is studying abroad at UMD for the semester. Stolle, who is from Germany, is a native speaker of the language. She enjoys practicing German with non-native speakers for fun.
Cameron Dulany, a freshman undecided major, exchanges conversation in German with Stolle. Although Dulany is in the 200 level of German at UMD, she is able to hold strong conversations.
Eunsoo Kang, a third year second language acquisition Ph.D. student, scrolls through his phone while waiting for a person to converse with at the Korean table. Kang is a resident of South Korea but is studying in the U.S.
David Knopf, a senior government and politics major, talks to a friend who is interested in practicing Hebrew with him. Knopf is currently studying at the introductory level of Hebrew, but he has a strong passion for the language.
