Week 5 — Jillian Atelsek
Ryan Romano, editor in chief of The Diamondback — the University of Maryland's independent student newspaper — reads over a review of a local play before publishing it on Monday, March 4, 2019. Connor Meyers and Zachary John enjoy a break behind the Co-Op's cash register. Employees of the Co-Op are called "worker-owners," and the space is filled with Marxist signs and art.
David, who recently started volunteering to help wash dishes at the Co-Op, said he wants to become a war correspondent one day — though he doesn't have any journalism experience.
Catherine Oberfield, a junior psychology major and worker-owner at the Co-Op, prepares a wrap for a customer. All employees must tie their hair back and wear a hat in the kitchen — and Oberfield wears her pterodactyl hat every day.
The Co-Op is crowded with shelved overflowing with magazines, books and pamphlets, many of which advocate for veganism. The restaurant's menu has a host of vegan and vegetarian options, like falafel, tempeh and seitan.
