Week 5 - Decisive Moments - Rina Torchinsky

Rohan Sivam, a fifth year bioengineering and chemistry double major, and Kyle Enchill, a freshman computer science major, tussle just after Sivam hurled the "Flrgrgr" across the room. Before stretching, members engaged in a game called "Flrgrgr" which involves tossing a frisbee-like object, known as the Flrgrgr.
Alumna Rina Berman holds up two pads for Nathan Mengers, a senior mechanical engineering major. Mengers was performing a two-tiered kick at Sunday's UMD Black Belt Club meeting, which welcomes martial artists of all styles and skill levels.
Sivam, a fifth year bioengineering and chemistry double major, launches a high kick into a pad in the basement of the School of Public Health. Sivam, who has a background in Taekwondo, is an instructor for the group.

Berman slings a kick into Mengers' pad in the matted room in the School of Public Health. Berman, who practiced Taekwondo for five years, graduated last semester but returns to the matted room for practice with the club.

Anna Magnaterra, a senior animal science major, holds a pad in anticipation of Sivam's impact. Magnaterra has extensive experience in Judo and Kenpo and serves an instructor, though she does not hold a black belt.

Magnaterra launches a kick into Sivam's pad at the UMD Black Belt Club. The two instructors worked together during the lesson portion of the practice. Lessons last about 45 minutes and are usually focused on a theme, in this case, it was kicking.

Sivam propels his foot above Magnaterra's head, as he shoots for a high kick while practicing during Sunday's lesson. Though this kick was just for practice, Sivam has also competed outside of the club at the elite level.

Sivam looks to align his foot with the pad as Magnaterra anticipates the impact. Though both students are instructors in the club, they were following a fellow instructor's lesson Sunday. The club alternate styles and instructors throughout the week.
