Short Story - Colleen Neely

Spring Saturday in D.C.

In the early 1900s, the government of Japan gifted the United States with Cherry Blossom trees, which were planted around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. The trees bloom around the same time every spring, drawing millions of visitors.

An airplane flies over the Jefferson Memorial, dedicated for former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. The cherry trees blooming draw huge crowds to the memorial and the Tidal Basin pathways each year.

Tourists and locals crowd the pathways of the Tidal Basin to take pictures of the cherry trees and surrounding monuments.

People fly kites at the Jefferson memorial, taking advantage of an unseasonably warm, sunny, and breezy Saturday.

Tourists often seek out quieter spots among the cherry trees for picnics with family and friends.

Thick crowds can be seen around the tidal basin pathways, with the Washington monument in the background.

A couple enjoys the warm day and takes a romantic stroll through the flowering trees.

Blooming cherry blossoms have become a key part of the D.C. springtime skyline.

An official United States helicopter flies over the crowds of pedestrians and paddle-boaters at the Tidal Basin.

Children and families climb stones at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.
