Week 4 - Composition - Rina Torchinsky

February 27, 2019 - Nathan Spicer-Davis, a freshman mechanical engineering major, pats down a tray of veggie fried rice for the Maryland Food Recovery Network at the North Dining Hall. Recovery at the North Dining Hall begins at 11:40 p.m. on Tuesdays.

February 27, 2019 - Sophomores Simran Bhattacharyya, a psychology major, and Haleigh Coar, a community health major, transfer leftover food to aluminum containers. Both students are volunteering as part of their pre-trip service requirement for their alternative break trip this Spring. 

February 27, 2019 - Sophomores Simran Bhattacharyya, a psychology major, and Haleigh Coar, a community health major, chat with fellow sophomore Sherry Fan, a physiology and neurobiology major, before the next load of food arrives in the kitchen. Fan, an alternative break and recovery leader, will be accompanying Bhattacharyya and Coar on their Spring journey to Kentucky.

February 27, 2019 - Jasmine Garcia, a sophomore studio art major, waits for kitchen staff to drop off more food. Garcia is a recovery leader for the Maryland chapter of the Food Recovery Network.

February 27, 2019 - Nathan Spicer-Davis, a freshman mechanical engineering major, scoops eggplant and squash into an aluminum container. Volunteers have recovered over 4311 pounds of food, as of Monday.

February 27, 2019 - Jesse Yates, a senior accounting and finance double major, helps volunteers transfer penne pasta out of the dining hall dishes. Yates has been volunteering since his freshman year and now serves as a recovery leader.

February 27, 2019 - Nathan Spicer-Davis, a freshman mechanical engineering major, hands a dining services employee an empty dish. He had just finished transferring the food out of it.

On Sunday afternoon sorority Alpha Omicron Pi and Fraternity Zeta Psi threw an event called "Play Outside With AOII and Zeta Psi" to raise money for their respective philanthropies. They raised a total of $5,000.  Students play a game of catch in front of the chapel during the event.  Olivia Campbell, Elizabeth Roche, Ella Mitchell, and Caroline Fleetwood hold up their new shirts they received at the event Edible cookie dough was sold to help raise money for the philanthropies, and was offered in 8 different flavors. Students get BBQ, a food that was included in the $5 ticket to attend.  Members of Alpha Omicron Pi play corn hole, another activity that was set up at Sunday. Students play an intense game of tug-of-war, which was made tricky that day because of the wind Members of AOII begin to clean up the event at 4p.m., when the event ended

Week 11 - Colleen Neely

In the Catholic Church, Easter is the most important day of the year. The day celebrates the rise of Jesus Christ to life after enduring crucifixion on Good Friday to pay for the sins of humanity. Many parishes undergo days of preparation for this event. At the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier (CCSFX) in Hunt Valley, MD, volunteers spend days preparing the church for the Easter Sunday Masses. The baptismal font at the front of the church is adorned with flowers to remind Catholics of the washing away of sins that also occurs at baptism. In the Catholic Church, parents choose baptism for their children and it is a sacrament typically performed during infancy. As is proclaimed by the banner, Jesus Christ rises on Easter Sunday. This event is considered proof that God will triumph over Satan, that good will always overcome evil.
